Shahre Mubarak Grand Masjid
The name Shahre Mubarak Grand Masjid means The Grand Mosque of the Blessed Hair as Shahre in Arabic means hair and Mubarak means blessed. It is the largest mosque in India that is being built in Calicut in Kerala. It is being built under the aegis of Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya which is a religious and charitable institution in South India that helps destitute Muslims and orphans in the field of education and other social and cultural issues and Kanthapuram AP Aboobaker Musalyar who is the head of the Sunni Muslims in South India. The mosque will have the remnant of the Hair that belongs to the Prophet Muhammad according to the Sunnis.
The largest mosque in India built over an area of 250, 000 sq. feet, will be able to hold a large congregation of 25000 at a time on completion.
History
Since the Mosque has still to be completed, there is no history associated to it except that the relic of the hair of Prophet Muhammad. It is also relevant to mention here that the construction of the mosque and the development of the land surrounding it is expected to cost around INR 400 million and these funds are collected through donations from 400,000 people in the Gulf countries each donating approximately INR 1000 which is equivalent to DHS 85.
Architecture
Twelve acres of land are allocated in the Knowledge City complex of the Islamic Center of Learning for this project to build a 250, 000 sq. feet mosque that can accommodate 30000 people at a time.
The architect and designer of the mosque; Riyaz Muhammad of Thrissur has designed the mosque on the Mughal Style of Architecture that will also conform to the new green building concepts so as to be environmentally friendly. A huge prayer hall to accommodate 30000 worshippers is the focal point of the mosque with the surrounding complex housing the auditorium for seminars and conferences, a large library and living facility to accommodate over a thousand people at a time. The buildings would be built in about eight acres and there would be four acres of greenery and beautiful gardens and landscaping surrounding the buildings.
How to Reach
Kozhikode is well connected by Air, Rail and Road and by sea route to the rest of the country and also the world. The Mosque on the outskirts of the city can be reached easily by public transport or private vehicle.
By Air
The Calicut International Airport has flights mainly from the Persian Gulf countries such as Dubai coming in. Domestic connections to all major cities are also available from Calicut Airport. Kochi or Cochin which is about 170 Kms and Chennai also have international airports and are well connected to Kozhikode. From any of these airports, pre-paid taxi service as well as bus service is available.
By Rail
Kozhikode is a main railway Junction of the Southern Railways and has innumerable trains from all major cities and towns from all over India. Superfast and high class trains also stop at Kozhikode.
By Road
Kozhikode is well connected by road to the rest of the country with state highways and national highways such as the NH17 , NH213 passing through or near the city. Buses ply from cities and towns around and within the city bus, taxi and rikshaw are the common means of public transport.
General Facts
When the announcement of the project was made in 2007, it had started a big storm in Kerala over the genuineness of the Holy Relic that the mosque was proposed to have.
The Knowledge City in which the mosque is located will have educational institutions such as a multi-steam engineering college, medical college, a multi-disciplinary hospital and health care facilities, a shopping mall, hotels, residential buildings etc. The entire Knowledge City project is estimated to cost over Rs. 12 billion. The educational institutes run by the Markaz have more than 17 thousand students out of which 6000 live in hostel accommodations on the campus. There are many NRI students here that are from different religious groups not necessarily Muslims.
